Established in 2008 from a dispute between owner Clay Bennett and lawmakers in Seattle, Washington, the team moved to Oklahoma City immediately after reaching a settlement that required Bennett to pay $45 million to prematurely end the SuperSonics’ lease with Seattle’s KeyArena, which was set to expire in 2010. The team agreed to release the SuperSonics’ name, logo, and colors to a possible future NBA club in Seattle, but retained rights to its franchise history.
The owners agreed to leave the ‘SuperSonics’ name, logo, and colors in Seattle for a possible future NBA franchise; however the items would remain the property of the Oklahoma City team along with other “assets” including championship banners and trophies.
The records, awards, and accomplishments of the pre-2008 SuperSonics will be “shared” between Oklahoma City and any future Seattle team.
In 2006, the SuperSonics franchise was sold to a group of Oklahoma City investors led by Clay Bennett for $350 million, a move approved by NBA owners the following October.

The rumors are all true. Most likely taken with with a camera phone, this link features a photo of the new Oklahoma City NBA franchise logo Oklahoma City NBA franchise logo on a team mini-ball.
I think it sounds cool. I’d rather be in Seattle than in Oklahoma City any day.You complain about our beaches, but at least we have them.
I’m not going to say anything bad about Seattle because I’ve never been there, but honestly if someone said what do you know about the great Seattle? I heard the Oklahoma City fans are so passionate that they stand from the start of the game until the home team scores.
Okay, as a totally neutral position as a Denver Nugget fan, I gotta say Congrats to the Oklahoma City.
Any okie “celebrity” news or any mention of oklahoma city in nationwide news are over hyped and over played by the media.
Ugliest City in the NBA, Ugliest fanbase in the NBA, Ugliest game in the NBA, and now the Ugliest name.
In June 2008, a lawsuit between the City of Seattle and Bennett went to Federal Court and nearly a month later the two sides reached an agreement to settle.

The people of Oklahoma are so excited to have a National level team for the very first time, and you should be happy for them.
Seattle people I do hope you get another team and I am glad to see a professional sport finally come to Oklahoma. Oh by the way the people saying bad things about both cities have most likely never been to either one so that makes both people foolish and petty.
The whole country voted to move the Indians to Oklahoma, not okies. This would honor and pay tribute to the rich who own all the prime real estate where the Native Americans and their families were forced to leave, murdered, massacred with whole Tribes of people almost wiped off the face of the earth.
Most people in Oklahoma my age hate Wranglers and cowboy hats and hope that the name has nothing to do with any stupid cowboy stuff.
I wasn’t really happy when I heard Thunder was the choice over some other great names, but honestly it fits Oklahoma perfectly, in fact one of my suggestions was the Tornados, but Thunder covers multiple weather conditions which is what we get here.
Thunder is the worst name I have ever heard! I was disappointed as well when I goggled “OKC Thunder” and this was the first site that came up.
You guys were class acts in hosting the Hornets and will be a MUCH better city for the Thunder. Clay Bennett even said he was moving the team as the 2007-08 season was beginning to start.
Did it ever occur to you that if you don’t want the team to relocate you probably shouldn’t sell the team to an ownership group from a city vocal about getting a franchise? I truly enjoy Seattle and think its a great city.
Oh yes Seattle is the City of rain-that is why it is called The Emerald City, full of people with above average income-brains and yes above you Okies - sure the players are mighty unhappy going to the Dust Bowel I wonder how long they will last there - Thunder - oh wow how clever.
I find these ridiculous comments about the beautiful city of Seattle very insulting, and frankly, they have nothing at all to do with the story at hand.
Either way both cities are doing well and the loss of a basketball team doesn’t hurt Seattle’s image.
Take it for what it’s worth Seattle.
Personally I could care less about basketball, but the way Oklahoma got the team is screwed up.
In saying that you had to see it coming when Oklahoma buisnessmen bought the team. 145 fans on average watched the Sonics last year, and when there’s word they are gone.BOOM.you want them.
In exchange for the team being allowed to move, the owners agreed to pay the city $45M to buy-out the two remaining years on the lease.
Yeah don’t trust the ownership group that has it’s own zipcode in our city, I’m sure they’ll be leaving right when they complete the new city in 2014.
I’m going to put on my PR hat and declare that if these are the options, this team is certain to be called the Thunder, the Marshalls, or some name that has not yet come to light.
