Stop the Press: The Grocery Game

NEW YORK TIMES - DECEMBER 18, 2003 Think of the Grocery Game as an electronic game you play in a real supermarket, not a virtual one.

PROVIDENCE RI - OCTOBER 16, 2005 Carol Ann Zelley used to hate grocery shopping. Now, it’s a challenge: She likes to see how much money she can save each week playing the Grocery Game. While The Grocery Game has the potential to help people save a lot of money on groceries, it’s just not the kind of “game” that everyone would enjoy or be willing to participate in. If you really want to save money on groceries with The Grocery Game, you have to be willing to follow a few unwritten rules.

The Grocery Game is a fun, easy way to save hundreds of dollars on groceries each month. What is suggested, however, is that the Grocery Game tells you what coupons you will find in this week’s paper AND when to use them to their greatest effect, which is not necessarily in the same week.

I started using the Grocery Game since May and I do think it is worth it for a family of 4 like ours. Three weeks ago my wife discovered The Grocery Game and it seems like we’re saving a lot of money on groceries this month.

I have never used the Grocery Game and don’t think I would pay for this service. We only have one local grocery store, and their sale info is not on the grocery game. My wife really enjoys playing the game and gets antsy by 11:30am on Sunday morning since the weeks list comes out at 1 Lanae, The Grocery Game deals are listed by your zip, so it’s local.

I may not be remodeling my life, but I am sure remodeling my husband! Four months ago, I started using The Grocery Game and religiously using coupons for all of our household cleaning and grocery shopping trips.

“The first eight weeks were the stock-up weeks, where my husband and I shopped five different stores - CVS, Walgreen’s, Meijer, Giant Eagle and Kroger,” Zuppo said. The next move is to log onto the Grocery Game Web site, where grocery gamers find a weekly and color-coded list of the lowest prices on products they use every day. I found that items listed in the sales ads were not listed on the Grocery Game list, that items listed on the Grocery Game list were not actually on sale at my list store, and also that some of the coupons the Grocery Game said I should have that week were not actually in my paper. Basically, the Grocery Game matches up the coupons in each Sunday’s paper with the sales going on at the grocery store of your choice. I just started 2 weeks ago and the 1st week I got $212 worth of groceries for $6 The second week I stuck STRICKLY to the blue and green item and bought $174 worth of groceries from $45!!!!!!!!!!

The web site www.pinchingyourpennies.com comes close, but it doesn’t maximize your coupons the way grocery game does.

The goal is not just to save money through coupons and stockpiling.

I was frustrated, because despite all that work, I’d only trim $6 to $10 off my grocery bill.

I’ve saved money doing it and have reduced my monthly grocery budget budget by several hundred dollars.

There is so much information on there and its not only grocery stores, it teaches you how to save everywhere and it 100% free.

I’m a Grocery Gamer.

I think the game is much more effective if you have a large space to store your stockpiled groceries and a larger family, and like others have said, if you like a lot of packaged goods.

I can’t imagine playing a game to buy my groceries to get discounts, I find that I spend too much time buying food now and am almost convienced that shopping online for home delivery will be cheaper as the supermarket temptations always increase my weekly bill.

I changed my grocery strategy to cooking more and buying more in season.
