Stephanie Tubbs Jones - Did you know?

Now in her fourth term in office and the first African-American woman elected to the United States House of Representatives from Ohio, Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones is a lifelong resident of the 11th District, which encompasses most of the East Side of Cleveland and parts of the West Side of Cleveland and includes parts of 22 suburbs. A strong advocate for many issues, has championed wealth building and economic development, access and delivery of health care, and quality education for all. 1

That background came in handy this week, as Tubbs Jones emerged as one of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s staunchest supporters — both in Ohio and in the Congressional Black Caucus — even when the chips appeared to be down for the New York senator. Clinton won Ohio’s Democratic presidential primary by 10 points on Tuesday with a big boost from Tubbs Jones, and that makes her Capitol Briefing’s Player of the Week. 2

Prior to being elected to Congress in 1998, Tubbs Jones served ten years as a judge on the Cleveland Municipal Court and the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas. From 1991-1998 she served as Cuyahoga County Prosecutor. 4

Tubbs Jones, 58, a five-term Cleveland Democrat, became the first black woman to represent Ohio in Congress in 1998. She is set to be a superdelegate at next week’s Democratic National Convention in Denver. 5

Washington, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones joined with her colleagues in supporting the most comprehensive response yet to the American mortgage crisis. The American Housing Rescue and Foreclosure Prevention Act will help families keep their homes, aid local communities hit hard by the foreclosure crisis, and strengthen the economy and financial markets. The bill was passed today in the House by a vote of 272-152. 3
