Get to know The Birds

Nat tells the terrified children that the birds were only hungry and cold.

In du Maurier’s story, the birds were attacking in the English countryside, rather than in a small town north of San Francisco.

“The Birds” is a ten for all of the above.

Oh no, certainly not.

There are more deaths as the movie-goer is given a “bird’s-eye” view of the scene as the birds swoop in on the citizens on the town. Melanie and Mitch’s family ultimately take refuge in Mitch’s house, where Mitch saves Melanie from birds that have broken into the attic. Melanie drives to Bodega Bay and delivers the birds by sneaking across the small harbor in a motor boat to the Brenner residence.

The car radio gives reports of several smaller attacks by birds in a few other communities in coastal California. The Birds is a horror film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, based on the short story of the same name by Daphne du Maurier. Unlike most other films of its era, The Birds does not have a music score or an ending in the conventional sense. According to The Hollywood Reporter a 2009 remake of The Birds is in production, with actress Naomi Watts, who is in discussions to take the role of Melanie Daniels. When he asks to “see” a canary and outstretches his hand, she obliges him, but accidentally releases the bird into the air - a foreshadowing of the unleashing of birds later in the film. The Birds is a modern Hitchcock thriller/masterpiece, his first film with Universal Studios. It is the apocalyptic story of a northern California coastal town filled with an onslaught of seemingly unexplained, arbitrary and chaotic attacks of ordinary birds - not birds of prey. In du Maurier’s story, the birds were attacking in the English countryside, rather than in a small town north of San Francisco.

The film commences on a white background, as dark black, silhouetted bird-shapes rush through and destroy the robin’s egg-blue credits as they appear, accompanied by upsetting noises of screeching flapping sounds and bird cries. Hundreds of birds were trained for use in some of the scenes, while mechanical birds and animations were employed for others.

Ungrammatical advertising campaigns emphasized: “The Birds Is Coming.” This Technicolor feature came after Psycho Psycho opnbrkt1960clsbrkt - another film loaded with ‘bird’ references. It is the story of a farmhand and his family who are attacked by a massive number of birds. The story was the inspiration for Alfred Hitchcock’s film of the same name, released in 1963, the same year that The Apple Tree was reprinted as The Birds and Other Stories. The story ends as Nat smokes his last cigarette, and burns the pack in the fire, while the birds continue their siege on the house.

It is thought to have been inspired by the author watching a man ploughing a field while seagulls were wheeling and diving above him; Du Maurier developed the idea of these birds becoming hostile and attacking.

Come, what is it like to live with the birds?

EPOPS By earth!

The scene where Tippi Hedren is ravaged by birds near the end of the movie took a week to shoot. Based on a short story by Daphne DuMaurier, the original story took place in an English seashore village where murderous birds attacked the local villagers. “The Birds” became the first horror/ fantasy film. Special effects, including mechanical birds, live and wild birds on strings, and optically altered film overlays of birds in flight made this a most frightening film. There is a guide book with more information about the filming of “The Birds” available at the Sonoma Coast Visitors Center in Bodega Bay.
