Get to know Obama Waffles
“You were comfortable for 20 years sitting in the pew, but now you’re saying ‘I don’t want anything to do with you.’”
Values Voter Summit organizers cut off sales of Obama Waffles boxes on Saturday, saying they had not realized the boxes displayed “offensive material.”
In NO WAY is this racist.
The boxes of Obama Waffles for sale at the 2008 Values Voter Summit were certainly racist and offensive, and conference organizers did the right thing by shutting down the sales booth in their exhibit. Throughout the conference, speakers brought up criticisms of Barack Obama similar or even identical to the text on the Obama Waffles box, ridiculing Obama for talking about being a “citizen of the world,” or misspeaking about “57 states.” Conference lead-off speaker Lou Dobbs, a vociferous anti-immigrant polemicist, posed for a picture at the booth while holding a box of Obama Waffles. The recipe card on the Obama Waffles box including ingredients such as goats milk and jalepeno peppers, and advises as a “Tip: While waiting for these zesty treats to invade your home, why not learn a foreign language.”
The Obama Waffles were sold for $10 a box from a booth at the Values Voter Summit sponsored by the lobbying arm of the Family Research Council. On the Obama Waffles box, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was pictured in a Muslim turban and says “Point box toward Mecca for tastier waffles.” Had they just put him on waffles it WOULD have been legitimate satire of course more fitting for McCain than Obama but legitimate none the less but the racist charicature is flat out racist.
It shouldn’t be any surprise to no one that people who like Sara Palin also like racist propaganda like the depiction on the box. On the back of the box, Obama is depicted in stereotypical Mexican dress, including a sombrero, above a recipe for “Open Border Fiesta Waffles” that says it can serve “4 or more illegal aliens.” WASHINGTON - Activists at a conservative political forum snapped up boxes of waffle mix depicting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama as a racial stereotype on its front and wearing A. Mark Whitlock and Bob DeMoss were attempting to lighten the mood in politics by selling “Obama Waffles” at the Value Voters Summit. I don’t see how one could possibly see this as racist, if Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, or any other canidate had the same record as Obama, they would have their face on a box of waffle mix. Not becuse the purveyors of the waffle mix took swipes at Obama on the box - I admit to chuckling over the slogan “Change you can taste” - but because of the gag product’s echo of a “real” African-American purveyor of breakfast food.
In a statement issued the day after I bought my box of Obama’s Waffles, FRCAction conceded that the product represented “an attempt at parody that crosses the line into coarseness and bias.” I didn’t purchase “Obama’s Waffles” out of ideological solidarity or even a fondness for waffles.
Really?
Maybe some of the Palin attacks have been sexist.
It”s funny.
Sen.
There is a side panel recipe for “Barry’s Bling Bling Waffle Ring” that features a “Recipe Rap” that begins with “Yo, B-rock here droppin’ waffle knowledge” with the rest of the ditty written in such an irritating White caricature of Black rap that even a White 1920s vaudeville blackface crooner would be embarrassed.
The attire in that picture isn’t singled to Muslims, most Kenyans dress that way be them Islamic, Christian, agnostic etc.
The republicans are spending way to much time worrying about Obama and not enough time trying to win a campaign.
The box was meant as political satire, said Mark Whitlock and Bob DeMoss, two writers from Franklin, Tenn., who created the mix.
DeMoss, who helped create the product, said that some people had been offended by the top of the box, showing Obama in a turban.
Yes.
To make “Barack Belgium Beauties,” the box says to pre-heat waffle iron and “Environmentally conscious consumers should pay two ozone-offset carbon credits to Al Gore’s GreenWorld fund.”
