Florida Weather is a precise and readable account of the weather and climate of Florida that will find a place on many bookshelves for those interested in the many aspects of life in Florida. Its charts have the potential to be used by tourists or those considering relocation to the Sunshine State, including retirement. If the book has a downside, it is that the topic of tropical storms is rather sparsely treated.

Fabled Florida weather is why Walt Disney chose Orlando as the site for his world-famous Disney World theme park in 1959. It’s why Florida is the timeshare vacation capital of America. It all starts with a sunny clime. Oranges and grapefruits, tropical gardens of bougainvillea and gardenias, balmy nights under a canopy of stars, gentle ocean breezes and pristine beaches.

Joviality aside, the author’s task is not as easy as those of others tackling the climate of other American States, exactly because of this uniformity of climate. In Florida Weather, Winsberg explains how the forces that control Florida’s weather and climate work: latitude, altitude, land and water distribution, ocean currents, prevailing winds, storms, and pressure systems, organizing the book by the seasons. The discussions of seasonal climate variabilities are followed by chapters on the various seasonal weather hazards: lightning, tornadoes, hurricanes, droughts and freezes. In its appendix, the book contains a number of useful statistical charts including probable temperature and rain possibility for each of the 52 weeks of the year for selected cities.

Florida’s climate is largely determined by the following factors- its proximity to the Atlantic Currents, the effects of inland lakes and its location in the eye of Hurricane forming weather fronts. While there is weather variation from north to south of the state, generally Florida weather is characterised by its dual seasonal conditions of long, humid summers and cool drier winters.

Picking up force as they near the mainland they will eventually smash the coast and move inland causing havoc and resulting in damage of sometimes up to billions of dollars. Hurricanes in Florida have in the past been absolutely devastating. The 2005 hurricane season was the most active Atlantic hurricane season in history and brought with it five destructive hurricanes- Dennis, Emily, Rita and of course Rita and Katrina. Rita and Katrina were two of the most damaging hurricanes in recorded history, with the latter being the United States deadliest hurricane since 1928 and the former being the costliest ever recorded. While the large majority of Katrina’s damage was felt further west of Florida, in and around New Orleans, the state still tragically recorded 14 deaths of the 1836 people killed.

The Sunshine State can boast, not only of its warm weather and beautiful beaches, but also of a job growth rate that is more than double the national average and a very low unemployment rate. Nearly every major industry is experiencing growth in Florida. The cities with the largest amount of new jobs in Florida are Miami-Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and Tampa-St.

The Orlando Florida weather is usually in the 70’s to low 80’s, nights are in the 50’s and 60’s. Naturally there can be cold snaps (and you could see days in the 50’s during the real cold snaps), but for the most part weather is nice.

Legendary Florida weather is even better here on the islands as the surrounding waters moderate the temperatures. Winter days are 5 degrees (F) warmer while summers are 5 degrees cooler than inland.

Florida’s weather is legendary to say the least. Whether you are going to Florida on summer holiday or for Christmas, the weather will be on your side. Summers in all parts of the state are generally long, hot and quite humid while winters are gentle with the occasional punch of cool air to freshen up the atmosphere.
