Jets TE Chris Baker just got paid.

On the September 19 broadcast of his Minneapolis Minneapolis radio show, Chris Baker addressed a Media Matters for America America item documenting his September 18 remark that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s reported response to the Wall Street crisis was”nother reason why it’s very rare to find a woman worthy of serving in political office.” Chris Baker, who began the offseason livid at the Jets for what he believed was a broken promise to renegotiate his contract, made a decision to take the high road as training camp approached - and that earned him the contract extension he got this. The new deal will pay him $12 million over those three new years, including $9 million of guaranteed money if Baker plays in 50 percent of the Jets plays this season and is on the roster the fifth day of the league year.

The guaranteed money is contingent, however, on Baker playing in 50 % of the 2008 offensive plays and that he is still on the roster come the 5th day of the 2009 league year, in March.

If Baker fails to play in 50 percent of the Jets” plays, he still will get the three-year, $12 million extension “- just without any guaranteed money. This is a face saving deal for Baker as JETS do not have to guarantee money if he plays in less than 50% of plays or if they cut him in March.

Actually, my first read of one of the reports is that if the contract is not guaranteed, Baker has the option of being a Free Agent.

A spokesperson for the Jets addressed the extension late Wednesday night, and the new deal is for another three years.”
